The opossum is found throughout the United States and is a nocturnal marsupial mammal. Whitish gray in color, opossums are America’s only marsupial mammal. These animals are opportunistic feeders and their diet includes everything from dead animals to your vegetable garden and garbage.

How opossums become a nuisance

Possums are a year-round nuisance in the Atlanta metropolitan area. They raid trash cans and eat animal food left outside. They are very comfortable in urban and suburban settings and will seek shelter under porches, in sheds and attics. Like raccoons, opossums will damage your roof and siding to gain entry to the attic. Once inside, their droppings build up and pose a health risk to your family.

Opossum damage

Opossums can do serious and expensive damage to your home. They damage insulation, chew on electrical wiring and tear up roof shingles and siding that allows water to enter your home. Left unattended, this can lead to serious structural damage and mold growth inside your home. Opossum droppings and urine leave a noxious smell and contain disease organisms harmful to your family and pets. You should act quickly if you think possums are taking up residence in your home or business.
